MY NEWS AND ESCAPADES

Julie Fletcher Photography

Great Walks' Wilderness Photographer of the Year, presented by Nokia, is searching for the best outdoor images captured by Australian photographers!

This year I am happy to be part of the judging panel for this competition. There are two categories, Places and People. For Places, we're looking for sweeping panoramas, dramatic horizons, spectacular coastlines and thought-provoking images of wilderness locations, both here and overseas. For People, we want to see your best wilderness photos with people in the frame.

Winners and runners up will share in a prize pool of more than $14,000 including $4,000 cash. Further, the Top 20 images in each category will be published in Great Walks magazine (December-January 2022 issue) and on www.greatwalks.com.au.

Entry fee is $20. I look forward to seeing your images.

Red Centre Workshop 2021

Julie is very passionate about her photography and helping others improve their skills. She takes magnificent photos. She knows the areas extremely well and the times that are best suited to visit. She is also an excellent organiser and puts together itineraries that cover a host of wonderful locations with the best possible times of day for each. She includes important details to ensure the timing is optimum throughout the trip and nothing is rushed.

Julie is a conscientious teacher and makes sure that everyone is getting the best shots possible. I learned how to use my lenses more efftively and now understand my wide angle lens and when to use it.  With the small number of participants we are not crowded as we take our shots and everyone gets attention when they need it.

If you're thinking about it, just do it. You will have the best time and get some great images.

Lamington National Park Workshop 2021

I have been a fan of Julie's work for many years and have always admired the way she "sees" things that many dont and the way she uses light even harsh light to capture the essence of an area. I was there for composition and learning a little more about using light. Julie was very helpful and gave some great tips and information to help improve our photography. She also took us into all the locations for the best light and at the best time to make the most of it and we were never rushed and could spend lots of time looking for unique shots and just enjoy the area. The birds were a bonus and we had time to spend practising our bird photograhy also. Lots of walking on this trip but nothing too streuous just lots of it. She is a great mentor and very talented and without ego. I highly recommend this trip and hope to do another in the future.

Red Centre Workshop 2021

Red Centre Workshop 2021

What an incredible trip. My first visit to the Red Centre and my first photo worshop with Julie as mentor and guide. The itinerary is awesome, covering a wide range of amazing locations from the Devil’s Marbles to Uluru and everything in-between.
Nothing is rushed - giving us plenty time at each venue to try out as many different shots, angles, etc as we like. But it is a full on itinerary - there’s not much sitting around in your hotel room. It's photography all the way.
The icing on the cake was the stunning chopper flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta on the final morning.

Julie’s experience meant that we got to the busier locations way before the crowds and always when the light is ideal for that location. With only four guests on this trip it really is “small group” allowing for plenty one-on-one with her. Julie is truly excellent at assessing exactly where each of us is individually in our photography skills and then guiding and challenging us to get to the next level. These really are photography workshops and I got so much out of it.

On top of all that we had lots of great laughs along the way, some great meals and wonderful memories.

If you’ve never been on a photo workshop before and thinking of doing one - then just book this one. It’ll give you an unforgettable experience.

Real Estate Photography 2020

I have been doing some high end real estate photography work which has been a nice change of pace and skill set which I am enjoying. I hope to get some more work this year to keep me busy as it has been an awful year with no workshops or tours happening which is income I rely on. I di a big property in Strathalbyn recently from the shearing shed paddocks to the house yard and all interiors. The owners were wrapped with the images and video footage that I captured and it is now showing on VIMEO. Check it out under my video blog section there is a link to it and all my other videos.

PANO AWARDS JUDGE FOR 2020

I have recently finished judging the Amateur section of the international competition Epsom Pano Awards for which I have been a judge in previous years. Over a week I trawled through a few thousand images. There were lots of fantastic images and it was really tough to judge round 2 for the very best shots. I really hope if you entered that you were happy with your results but please keep in mind it really is subjective and don't be disheartened if you did not do as well as you hoped. Just have a look at the other high scorers and aim to do better next year.

Image Theft of my Koala Shot 2020

This shot of mine taken back in the 2019 bush fire on Kangaroo Island which won the Big Picture Awards in 2019 has been stolen time and time again now and misused and used without my permission. Since these bush fires It has been used on go fund me pages and newsletters chasing money and facebook posts again chasing donations. My images are not to be used for monetry gain of any sort unless its being paid for and under a licence. I have been abused contacting people and pages in the past few weeks to take it down or cop a bill for usage. I doubt you would appreciate your possessions being taken without permission and misused so why is it expected that I should be happy about people using my images for what ever purpose they want without my permission or payment just because I won an award for it and its been strewn all over the internet and because its of a bushfire. I dont know about you but I expect to get paid for my work and its hard enough to make a living out of landscape photography as it is but this copyright theft and peoples attitude has got to stop. I now use a copyright company to help me chase down images that have been stolen which takes the pressure and stress from me. So if you have me shot I suggest you take it down because we are on the war path at the moment and if we can get Sky News to pay up we can get you too.

This image has been purchased for multiple uses by WWF Australia who understand that payment is necessary to photographers for their images to make money for their fund. Thank you WWF.

Red Centre Northern Territory Photo Tour July 2017

I have been pondering the best manner in which to highlight to all and sundry the extraordinary experience on two (thus-far) tours with Julie Fletcher. The difficulty I have is that it would be too easy to throw the words “brilliant”, “extraordinary”, “mind-blowing”, “surprising”, “exhilarating”, “challenging”, “fun” etc. around like…
