Fagus time in Tasmania April-May 2016

For a short time every year the trees in Cradle Mountain National Park take on autumn colour, a scene that is stunning. I recently came back from Tasmania spending a month travelling around and building an itinary for a tour next year. I also made sure I arrived in time for fagus week and was not disapointed with what I saw. I did a lot of walking on many of the tracks in Cradle Mountain National Park so I knew what would best suit a group next year. I also travelled to several other parts of Tassie doing exactly the same thing a reconnaissance for a tour. Overall it was great weather but of course being Tasmania I always expeceted a mixed bag of good and bad weather. I love it over there and what I liked the most was the unexpected and all the walking trails some easy some extreme and the challenge of a completely different environment from where I live here in the outback of South Australia.

I am currently finalising the itinary for the trip and am excited about taking people over to Tassie and getting them in to some key locations. If your interested in coming along in 2017 please subscribe to my newsletter and I will notify of the dates when they are online and bookings can be made to hold your space. You dont want to miss this trip its going to be fantastic.

Hope to see you there in 2017.

Lake Eyre Photo Tour April 2016

TESTIMONIAL SUE CHAPLIN

Sometimes, out of the blue, comes opportunities that should be grabbed with both hands and are not to be missed. It could be the location, the timing, the activity or just the sponteniety that makes it special. Joining Julie Fletcher on her inaugural Lake Eyre Photography Tour was one such opportunity that I definitely didn't want to miss, after all there is only ever one inaugural trip anywhere, and I knew this was going to be special.

The timing was perfect - being South Aussie born and growing up in the driest state in the driest continent on earth, I knew that to see water in Lake Eyre was a rare event, something that not everyone gets a chance to see and possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. Wet Season rain flowing down from the north and fortuitous rain in the far north of South Australia a couple of weeks prior to the trip made it even more special, the outback was awash with green, the cattle fat and rivers and creeks flowing into the lake making it a spectacle to behold.

Our tour group consisted of 5 avid photographers of varying skill levels and we were treated to some of the most amazing locations in which to hone our skills. Julie shared with us her favourite places, giving us the opportunity to emulate some of her famous and popular outback shots, from high above the lake to starry outback skies, bullet riddled car wrecks and the most special of all, her favourite and 'secret' spot on the lake that is inaccessible and unknown to the general public. This place is unspoilt and pristine, its rugged beauty in daylight stark contrast to the soft pastels of the lake at dawn and dusk and the most amazing salt bed you will ever see. I would rate this special location in my top 3 travel destinations, up there with the beauty of the Maldives and the adrenalin rush of walking the rim of an active volcano at night in Vanuatu. It has a presence that is indescribable, a serenity that belies its harsh and arid location, and a beauty that is felt, not just seen.

Julie's love of country and her chosen field is palpable. Her ability to work with workshop participants of varying skill levels is masterful and encouraging. Her down to earth approach makes it easy to learn and she is determined that everyone WILL learn something, even those like me who march to the beat of their own drum and do things their own way!!!

If the opportunity ever presents and you share a love of photography and our amazing country, a workshop with Julie won't disappoint, regardless of its location. If you get a chance to see Lake Eyre in all its glory, just go. It is a rare occasion that all things come together and put on a show like we were treated to.

So, location, check. Timing, check. Activity, check (who could resist 3 days of photography with no interruptions!). Spontaneity, check. And if I get another chance, I'll be there with bells on.....

Lake Eyre Photo Tour April 2016

Dear Julie,

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Marree/Lake Eyre workshop last weekend! Your tutelage was excellent, the other participants were a great group of people and lots of fun, and the locations were amazing!! The flight you organised, though additional, was worth every cent!

I am so glad I made the effort to join you, and despite the odd personal mishap, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and appreciate the extra little touches you arranged for my benefit. (Hope your hand has recovered from helping down the slope at Lake Harry!)

Yours sincerely,

Christine (Victoria)

Lake Eyre Photo Tour April 2016

I can't really put into words what this experience meant to me. Julie's bravery and determination has always been an inspiration and without that I would never have attempted the journey alone:-) The tour was amazing, the light was amazing and the main location was simply breathtaking. To experience all that with a great bunch of characters was something I will never forget!

I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to visit this very special place and learn so much from Julie, who's passion for photography and this area flows over who ever is around her. If ever you have the chance to spread your wings and participate in a tour, grab it with both hands while you can!!

And then there is Lyall at the roadhouse.....what a gem!!.....if ever you are travelling through Marree, he grills theeee best scotch fillet I have ever eaten!!

Lake Eyre Photo Tour April 2016

I just spent the most amazing 3 days on Julie Fletcher’s Lake Eyre Photography Tour/Workshop. Her photography speaks for itself but I wasn’t sure what to expect from her as a teacher. I was not disappointed. I lapped up anything she had to teach us. Julie catered to all of our levels of expertise and was very patient and helpful. She is very humble and fair and did not hold back on revealing any of her photography secrets or amazing locations (including one that is not accessible to the general public). Julie genuinely wanted us all to ‘get the money shot’ and with her guidance, we all did.
I was with a great bunch of people and although we hit the ground running and didn’t stop, we all would do it over again in a second. If you are thinking of going on a workshop, I can’t recommend it enough…….and if you end up doing a Marree or Lake Eyre workshop make sure you try one of Lyall’s char grilled steaks. It was honestly the best I have ever had.
Thanks Julie, I hope to see you in the outback again one day.

Lake Eyre Photo Tour April 2016

Dear Julie,

To think that I had been assessing the pro's and con's of attending my very first photo workshop for over 12 months is now hard to believe - what was I thinking!

With so much to see, learn and do during the workshop the drive home gave me the first opportunity to reflect on just what had taken place and I couldn't get the smile off my face.

What an amazing experience I had from stunningly beautiful locations where you just had to step out from behind the camera and take it all in to the characters and feeling that can only exist in a place like Marree.

The Lake Eyre workshop had everything and more and I have gained so much knowledge and experience from yourself and also from my fellow workshop participants and I feel privileged to have been apart of it.

I look forward to attending another workshop in the future.

Kind regards,

Terry

Images from my recent Photo Tour from the participants Terry, Sue, Margaret, Christine and Toni.

Hello Julie,

I just thought that I would write a quick note to thank you for the opportunity to attend your Lake Eyre workshop.

You said it as going to be epic and it was. It was a privilege to have been able to see and experience your special location which is one of the most stunningly beautiful areas that I have ever seen and to do it with a group of like minded people was truly memorable.

I would do it again in a heartbeat but I just need a new lens first and thanks for allowing me to use yours.

I will write a testimonial for you over the next few days but I just wanted to pass on my thanks to you - I'm still buzzing!

Regards,

Terry
